Noriyuki Haga (Race 1– 3rd, Race 2– 4th)“I’m really happy to be back on the podium today, but it wasn’t easy! At the start of Race 1 I was having trouble pushing but after a few laps the tyres picked up a bit and I was finally able to get past Camier in the final stages. It’s a great result and the first time I’ve been on the Miller podium. In Race 2 I had a similar feeling with my bike but the race was more difficult. I started badly and had to push so hard to make up the lost ground. In the last two years my weekends at Miller have been conditioned by crashes but this year I had a good feeling right from the first exit I made on Friday and this gave me confidence that a podium was possible. I’m satisfied and now we move on to Misano, a circuit where there is no long straight and where the Ducati could be very fast.”

Michel Fabrizio (Race 1– DNF, Race 2– 9th):“It’s a pity what happened to me in race 1. It was totally unexpected, my bike was sliding around at the rear and then, from one moment to the next, I found myself on the ground. In Race 2 I made a bad start, losing several positions and finding myself in the last group. I made up ground through the race but I wasn’t able to catch Rea and Byrne ahead of me and finished ninth. I hoped to do a lot better here in America but now we must turn our attention to the next round in Misano.”

Jakub Smrz (retired, retired): “We didn’t get any luck. I thought I could do well, everything was going my way until race 1, but once again we couldn’t achieve our goal . Next up is Misano which is another track I feel comfortable at, I hope to redeem myself in front of the Italian crowd”.

Shane Byrne (Race 1- 6th, Race 2- 7th): “The bike felt very good and I was happy with the set-up”, said Shane. “I found that the level of grip varied between race 1 and race 2, it was better in the first. But I’ve taken some good points and this makes me more determined as we enter the second half of the Championship.”

Carlos Checa (retired, retired): “Everything went well: the work, the preparation, the performance, the passion, the race, the team”,“Yet unfortunately the results did not come. It’s never happened before! We were strong and I will leave here with my head held high. I will immediately turn the page and concentrate on the upcoming tests in Misano and the next race, where I know we can do well. That’s racing…”

Michel Fabrizio (1′37.368): “Today’s Superpole was not at all easy. I had to really push and at one point I risked finding myself on the ground. I thought I’d finished in second but in the end it was fourth. Anyway, I’m on the front row tomorrow and am confident that I can make two great races. We’ve been going strong both today and yesterday and I know I have good race pace. Of course the competition is always the same but, from fourth on the grid, I think I can push for the win.”

Noriyuki Haga (1′38.496): “Today I had problems due to a lack of rear grip. In the Superpole, even on the qualifier, I didn’t have enough grip to be able to turn the bike and really push. We still have tomorrow morning to work on the bike and we’ll do our best to improve.”

Jakub Smrz (1′37.561): “We tried to qualify in the front row and we barely missed it. However, after getting out of the track in Superpole 2 , I have to be satisfied with the result. We’re very confident for tomorrow, when we hope to finish in the top 6 because we have a very performant bike, on which I set a series of very fast laps today. However, I’ll have to work on improving the braking performance in warm up tomorrow. We’ll see what the track conditions will be and then we’ll choose the type of tyres”.

Carlos Checa (1’43”506): “Today went a lot better than first qualifying”, said Carlos. “We’ve made some steps forward with regard to the bike’s rideability and we were able to better understand why we were having problems through certain sections of the track. Tomorrow will be difficult and to get into the top ten will be hard but we’ll try to take home as many points as possible.”

Shane Byrne: (1’43”813): “To start from fifteenth will be hard but I’ll give it my all and try to make a good race”, said the English rider. “We have done some good work in the garage over these two days and tomorrow it will be important to start well and stick with the guys ahead of us.”

Michel Fabrizio (1′37.368): “Non è stata per niente facile la Superpole di oggi. Ho dovuto spingere veramente forte e a un certo punto ho rischiato di andare a terra. Pensavo di aver finito secondo ma invece ero quarto. Sono comunque in prima fila per domani, e sono molto fiducioso di poter fare due belle manche. Siamo andati forte sia oggi che ieri e so di avere un buon passo gara. Ovviamente i concorrenti sono sempre gli stessi ma, dalla quarta posizione in griglia, penso di poter puntare alla vittoria.”

Noriyuki Haga:′(38.496) :“Oggi ho avuto problemi per una mancanza di grip al posteriore. Nella Superpole, anche quando giravo con le qualifiche, non avevo il grip necessario e senza quello è stato difficile far girare la moto e spingere forte. Abbiamo ancora domattina per lavorare sulla moto e cercare di migliorare”

Jakub Smrz (1′37.561): “Abbiamo provato a conquistare la prima fila che ci è sfuggita per pochissimo, anche se dopo il brivido dell’uscita sull’ erba nel turno precedente per il quale ho rischiato di non entrare nei primi otto, devo dire che va bene così. Siamo molto fiduciosi in vista della gara, dove puntiamo a confermarci entro le prime sei posizioni, forti di una moto performante che mi ha permesso di ripetere una serie di giri su tempi molto interessanti. Dovrò sperimentare domattina nel warm up una soluzione che mi permetta di migliorare la fase di frenata e, in base alle condizioni della pista, scegliere le gomme da utilizzare”.

Shane Byrne (1’43”813): “Partire dalla quindicesima posizione sarà dura ma darò il massimo con l’obiettivo di correre una bella gara – dice il pilota inglese – al box abbiamo fatto un buon lavoro durante i due giorni di prove e domani l’importante sarà scattare bene al via e cercare di tenere la scia dei ragazzi davanti a noi”.

Carlos Checa (1’43”506): “Oggi è andata nettamente meglio rispetto alle prime prove – dice Carlos – abbiamo fatto dei passi avanti con la ciclistica ed abbiamo capito cosa non è andato soprattutto in alcuni tratti della pista. Domani sarà una gara difficile, entrare nella top ten sarà dura ma proveremo a portare a casa più punti possibili”.

Michel Fabrizio: “Race 1 was going quite well; it’s only a shame that we don’t have the top speed to be able to stick with the guys on the straight, with more engine power I could have done a lot better. In Race 2 I ran off when those guys crashed at the first chicane of the first lap and I tried to keep riding but I couldn’t get the bike into gear, and then I slipped. It was tough out there today but at least we take home some valuable points and hope that things go better at Kyalami.”

Noriyuki Haga: “In both races I was having a lot of difficulty turning the bike and didn’t have enough grip at the rear. In Race 1 I was having to put it right down on its side to get it to turn as I wanted and this of course meant that I couldn’t keep pace with those ahead of me. We changed a few things before Race 2 and improved the situation a little. Grip was good in the first five laps or so but from mid-race it was really hard, as the bike was drifting wide and was hard to control. In the end I’m quite satisfied with sixth position, as it was tough here this weekend.”

Filippo Preziosi -General Director, Ducati Corse: “I’m sorry for Michel because in Race 1 he did really well considering the disadvantage we have here in terms of power and top speed; he was making up in his riding what was lost in top speed, at a track that penalizes us. I’m happy for Nori because in Race 2, in a difficult situation, both technically and personally, he fought tooth and nail and proved what a champion he is.”

Jakub Smrz:”It was a difficult weekend for us but the team did a great job once again. After yesterday’s crash in Superpole, I didn’t practice much in warm up and lost a bit of confidence. I didn’t get a good start in race 1 and I was way behind. In race 2, I started determined to do well and gained a few positions. Unfortunately, Toseland and Xaus crashed right in front of me and I had to brake to avoid them. As a consequence, I lost all the positions I had gained but I fought back and tried as hard as I could to close the gap between myself and the riders in front of me. However, I regret not having had a better starting position. I’m sure I could’ve battled with Sykes and Haga for a slot in top 5″.

Lorenzo Baroni: “I had a lot of fun today and I’m very happy with the result as well. Too bad I lost a lot of time passing the slower riders. If I had a better starting position, I’m sure I could’ve battled for the top spots”.

Shane Byrne:“We knew it would be difficult but in the end, thanks to my team’s hard work in the garage, we took a good result and I had fun, especially in Race 2”, said “Shakey”. “On Friday we were a long way off but today we were not so far behind the competition. I’m sorry for Genesio and for the team because I know they would have liked to do better at their “home” track but I did my best and gave 110%. I know we can do better at Kyalami.”

Carlos Checa:“It was a difficult weekend and probably, if we consider the gap between us and the four cylinders, it’s true to say that I wasn’t very motivated here. The fact that we haven’t managed to find the right balance with the bike has definitely impacted on the results. Fortunately we now go to Kyalami, a track that suits our bike. The engine power doesn’t count as much and we’ll strive to get back on form.”

Michel Fabrizio: “Gara 1 è andata abbastanza bene; è solo un peccato non aver avuto una velocità di punta sufficiente per stare con gli altri in rettilineo, con un po’ di potenza in più avrei potuto fare molto meglio. In Gara 2 sono uscito di pista quando alcuni piloti sono caduti alla prima chicane. Ho provato a continuare a guidare ma non riuscivo a cambiare bene le marce e poco dopo sono scivolato perdendo il posteriore. Oggi è stata dura ma almeno abbiamo portato a casa dei punti preziosi e adesso speriamo che vada meglio a Kyalami”.

Noriyuki Haga:“Ho avuto molte difficoltà a far curvare la moto in entrambe le gare e mancava un po’ di “grip” sul posteriore. In Gara 1 dovevo piegare tantissimo per far girare la moto come volevo e naturalmente questo mi faceva perdere molto tempo. Prima di Gara 2 abbiamo fatto qualche modifica migliorando un po’ il problema. L’aderenza è stata buona nei primi cinque giri ma da metà gara in poi è stata davvero dura, la moto tendeva ad allargare ed era difficile controllarla. Alla fine sono soddisfatto di essere arrivato sesto, è stato un fine settimana molto impegnativo”.

Filippo Preziosi -Direttore Generale, Ducati Corse:“Mi dispiace per Michel perché in gara 1 ha fatto una gara molto bella considerando lo svantaggio che abbiamo in termini di potenza e velocità massima. Aveva recuperato con la guida tutto quello che perdeva in velocità in un circuito molto penalizzante per noi. Sono invece contento per quello che ha fatto Nori in Gara 2 perché, anche in una situazione difficile, tecnica e anche personale, ha lottato con le unghie e con i denti e si è dimostrato il grande campione che é.”

Jakub Smrz: “E’ stato un week end difficile, nel quale ancora una volta la squadra ha lavorato in maniera splendida. Dopo la caduta nella Superpole di ieri, ho potuto girare poco stamani nel warm up ed ho perduto un po’ di fiducia. In gara 1 non sono riuscito ad essere incisivo al via, così sono rimasto intruppato nelle retrovie. Nella seconda manche sono partito determinato. Ho trovato il varco giusto ed ho recuperato parecchie posizioni. Purtroppo Toseland e Xaus mi sono caduti davanti costringendomi a frenare per evitarli. Ho perduto così quanto guadagnato. Volevo recuperare e giro dopo giro ho rosicchiato margine ai piloti che mi precedevano. Mi resta il rammarico per quello che avrebbe potuto essere con una posizione di partenza diversa, avrei certamente potuto rimanere almeno con Sykes ed Haga”.

Lorenzo Baroni: “Oggi mi sono molto divertito e non posso che essere soddisfatto del risultato raggiunto. Ho corso all’ attacco, peccato solo per il tempo perduto durante i primi giri, nei quali ho dovuto passare piloti più lenti di me. Se fossi riuscito a partire più avanti sono certo che avrei potuto lottare per le posizioni di vertice”.

Michel Fabrizio: “It feels like we’re on the limit and today I found it very hard to make fast lap times. The important thing I guess is that we have a good race pace, this morning I was able to make quite a few laps with consistently fast times. Of course this is not the result I hoped for from Superpole, also because starting from the third row at this particular track will be far from easy. We’re all so close this weekend, separated by just a couple of tenths of a second, so tomorrow I know it’ll be hard but I’ll try my best.”

Noriyuki Haga: “In today’s Superpole the first qualifier didn’t help me too much. The second was much better but while making a fast lap with that tyre, I had a problem with my seat which was moving around so it was hard to concentrate and I finished the second Superpole session one tenth of a second too slow. Anyway, we have a good race pace so tomorrow we just have to see how the races go. I’m fairly confident as we have a good race package, having also made a nice long run yesterday. Of course I need to make a strong start but I’m fairly sure I can do that.”

Carlos Checa:“To start in second is great of course. We’ve worked well all weekend and have resolved some small problems while others remain. On this track it is not easy, and what’s important is your rhythm, keeping good pace on used tyres. With our set-up and my riding style we should be able to maintain pace. Tomorrow I think the race will be between Haslam, Crutchlow and a few others and we will be there with them.”

Shane Byrne: “With the first qualifier I went well while with the second I had problems. Tomorrow morning we’ll make more changes to be ready for the race.”

Jakub Smrz: “I’m really disappointed I couldn’t replicate my performance in Superpole as well. We did a great job the entire weekend, we just weren’t lucky. After we mounted the soft tyre, I was slowed down in the last corner by Byrne, who was on my trajectory .
I returned to the pits to put on the second soft tyre, but I crashed, unfortunately, in the first full-speed lap after a few corners. I’ll start from the fourth row, I hope this time I’ll do better now that I’m starting from the back. In the first two rounds, I got a better starting position but I wasn’t very effective in the first laps”.

Lorenzo Baroni: “I didn’t race at my full potential this weekend due to some electrical issues with the bike. As a consequence, I couldn’t find the right setup but despite everything I’ll start from row three. I hope the problems will be solved tonight so I can score a good result”.

Michel Fabrizio: “Sembra che siamo al limite sul giro secco; ho faticato a fare i tempi in configurazione prova. L’importante però è che sembra che abbiamo un buon passo gara, oggi ho fatto molti giri con gomma da gara, registrando tempi costantemente veloci. Ovviamente non è il risultato che volevo ottenere dalla Superpole, anche perché partire dalla terza fila qui a Valencia sarà molto difficile. Siamo tutti troppo attaccati, separati da solo un paio di decimi, domani sarà veramente una sfida ma farò del mio meglio.”

Noriyuki Haga: “Nella Superpole la prima gomma da qualifica non mi ha aiutato più di tanto. La seconda è stata meglio ma purtroppo, mentre facevo il giro veloce con quella, avevo allo stesso tempo un problema con la sella che si muoveva e mi ha tolto concentrazione. Sono rimasto fuori per un solo decimo di secondo. Comunque, abbiamo un buon passo gara e domani dobbiamo vedere cosa riusciremo a fare nelle gare. Sono abbastanza fiducioso del pacchetto che abbiamo, anche perché sono riuscito a fare un buon long-run ieri. Ovviamente è necessario partire molto forte ma sono sicuro di potercela fare.”

Jakub Smrz: “Sono molto dispiaciuto per non essere riuscito a confermarmi in Superpole. Abbiamo lavorato veramente bene per tutto il week end, ma non siamo stati fortunati. Quando ho montato la prima gomma morbida ho trovato in traiettoria Byrne sull’ ultima curva che mi ha rallentato.
Sono rientrato così ai box, ho montato la seconda gomma morbida a mia disposizione, purtroppo però nel primo giro lanciato mi si è chiuso l’anteriore dopo poche curve. Scatterò così dalla quarta fila, confidando di invertire la tendenza rispetto alle gare precedenti, dove sono sempre partito davanti, ma non sono riuscito ad essere efficace nei primi giri”.

Lorenzo Baroni: “In questo week end non sono riuscito a lavorare al meglio a causa di problemi di natura elettrica. Non sono riuscito così a trovare un setting ottimale, nonostante ciò scatterò dalla terza fila. Spero che durante la sera i problemi vengano risolti, per cercare di guadagnare in gara un buon piazzamento”.

“Partire in seconda posizione – ha detto Carlos Checa – va benissimo. Abbiamo lavorato bene in tutto il week end ed abbiamo risolto alcuni problemini mentre altri non ci siamo riusciti. Su questa pista non facile, importante sarà il ritmo, facendo i tempi anche con la gomma usata. Con il nostro set up e con la mia guida dovremmo riuscire a essere costanti. Domani la gara sarà con Haslam, Crutchlow e qualche altro e noi saremo con loro”".

The crowds at Phillip Island were today treated to two spectacular Superbike races, the first of which resulted in the closest ever finish in Superbike history, with Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) crossing the line just 0.004 of a second behind Leon Haslam on the Suzuki. Less than a second behind Michel, in third place, was his team-mate Noriyuki Haga. Race 2 was also extremely hard fought and some very close racing which made for great viewing saw Michel battle his way to a third place finish with Nori just behind him in fifth.
This morning’s warm-up passed without incident for Michel, who registered the fourth fastest lap time but unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for his team-mate Noriyuki, victim of a 250 km/hour crash on entering in the first corner after being knocked from his 1198 by Xaus. The doctors of the circuit’s medical centre declared him fit to ride, although the Japanese rider had suffered some bruising to his back, as well as a severe blow to the right forearm which swelled to such an extent as to require an pain-relief injection before the race.

Despite the difficulties in warm-up, race 1 began very well for both Ducati Xerox riders, Michel holding second position and Noriyuki, fast as lightning in his start, making up several position, to rocket from tenth to third position through the first corners. Right from the second lap the gap between the leaders, Haslam, Fabrizio and Haga, and the chasing pack, led by Jonathan Rea, began to increase and by mid-race the top three had built a five second advantage over fourth placed Rea. In the final four laps Michel tried to find a way past the young Briton but it was not to be and a final charge to the finish line led to a photofinish, with the result being declared the closest ever finish in a Superbike race. Michel crossed the line a mere four thousandths of a second after Haslam, with Haga following less than a second behind to snatch the third spot on the podium.
Race 2 began in exactly the same way as the first, with Haslam, Fabrizio and Haga again off the line quickest to take an immediate lead. Haslam’s team-mate Sylvain Guintoli soon joined the fray, as did Carlos Checa mid-race, and a five-way battle for supremacy ensued. Nori, still suffering after the earlier crash, could not keep pace with the other four but held fifth position, taking home important points in the process. Checa, on board Althea Racing’s Ducati 1198, waited until the last lap before passing both Fabrizio and Haslam to take the lead, leaving the Italian and the Briton to battle it out for second.
A very strong start for the Ducati Xerox Team as far as the championship standings are concerned, Michel in second position with 36 points, Nori fourth with 27 and their combined performances today putting Ducati in joint first place with Suzuki in the manufacturers classification.

Michel Fabrizio (Race 1 – 2nd , Race 2 -3rd): “I had a great battle with Leon in Race 1. In the last four laps I tried to understand where I could attempt to get past him but it wasn’t easy so I pushed on right to the finish line and, to tell the truth, I thought I’d done enough! Leon and I were right there together as we crossed the line, and on the big screen I could see my wife celebrating in the box – but the result was decided by the photofinish and I had to settle for 20 points this time. The great thing about the Superbike championship however is that there are two races…. My team did not make any changes to the bike before the second race and I was again able to make a good start but it was a very difficult race. I stayed there with the leading pack but I realized it would be very hard to win, and in the last four laps it became more difficult to fight. I am very happy with today’s results, which put me in second place on the leaderboard after round 1. It will be a very long and challenging season but we’ve made a good start today.”

Noriyuki Haga (Race 1 – 3rd , Race 2 – 5th): “My result in Race 1 was really good as far as I’m concerned as I had had a crash during the warm-up and suffered from a bit of arm-pump during the race. I was confident that I could make a good start from 10th position and I did so and then I tried to keep up with Michel and Leon but my arm led me to make a few small mistakes. Anyway I really enjoyed the race and the points I made in the race are definitely a good start for the championship. In the second race my arm played up more and it became harder to brake, I felt very tired physically. But all in all, with regard to the classification and bearing in mind this morning’s accident, it didn’t go too badly; I finished third and fifth and we take home some good points.”

Oggi il pubblico di Phillip Island ha potuto godere di due fantastiche gare di Superbike, la prima delle quali è stata caratterizzata dal podio più serrato nella storia della serie: Michel Fabrizio è infatti passato davanti alla bandiera a scacchi appena quattro millesimi di secondo dopo la Suzuki di Leon Haslam . In terza posizione, a soli 7 decimi è arrivato il compagno di squadra di Michel, Noriyuki Haga. Anche Gara 2 è stata molto combattuta e Fabrizio è salito ancora una volta sul podio; con Nori quinto.
Il warm-up è andato bene per Michel, che ha fatto registrare il quarto tempo, mentre il suo compagno di squadra è stato meno fortunato, vittima di una caduta a 250km/h in ingresso alla curva 1 per la collisione con Xaus che ha disarcionato Nori dalla sua 1198. Haga ha ricevuto dai medici il nulla osta per partecipare alle gare ma ha comunque riportato forti contusioni alla schiena e all’avambraccio destro con forte edema che ha richiesto un infiltrazione prima della gara.
Nonostante le difficoltà del warm-up, Gara 1 è iniziata molto bene per entrambi i piloti Ducati Xerox; Michel ha mantenuto la seconda posizione che aveva in griglia e Noriyuki, un fulmine in partenza, ha recuperato parecchie posizioni, passando subito dal decimo al terzo posto. I primi tre piloti, Haslam, Fabrizio e Haga fin dal secondo giro hanno cominciato a guadagnare sul gruppo di inseguitori, condotto da Jonathan Rea, e a metà gara avevano un vantaggio di oltre cinque secondi sul pilota Honda. Negli ultimi giri Michel ha tentato di passare Haslam ma è riuscito ad arrivargli davvero vicino solo negli ultimi istanti della gara, passando sotto la bandiera quasi nello stesso momento. E’ stato un photofinish, il più serrato della storia delle Superbike con Michel a soli quattro millesimi da Haslam, e Haga terzo immediatamente alle loro spalle.
Gara 2 ha avuto un inizio fotocopia, con Haslam, Fabrizio e Haga di nuovo i migliori al semaforo e subito al comando. Il compagno di Haslam, Guintoli, si è unito al gruppetto di testa quasi immediatamente mentre Checa li ha raggiunti a metà gara portando a cinque i piloti in lotta per il podio. Nori, sofferente per il braccio destro e i dolori alla schiena dopo la caduta del mattino, non è stato in grado di tenere il ritmo degli altri fino alla fine ma ha chiuso comunque quinto, portando a casa punti preziosi. Checa ha atteso l’ultimo giro per sferrare un attacco prima su Fabrizio poi Haslam, che a loro volta hanno lottato per il secondo gradino del podio, appannaggio finale dell’inglese.
Un inizio di Campionato importante per la squadra Ducati Xerox in termini di classifica iridata con Michel Fabrizio in seconda posizione con 36 punti e Noriyuki Haga in quarta con 27. Nella classifica Costruttori Ducati è davanti insieme alla Suzuki con 45 punti.

Michel Fabrizio (Gara 1 – 2° , Gara 2 – 3°): “Ho fatto una grande battaglia con Leon in Gara 1. Negli ultimi quattro giri ho provato a capire dove avrei potuto tentare il sorpasso ma non era facile. Per questo ho provato sul rettilineo di arrivo e, a dire il vero, per un attimo ho pensato di avercela fatta! Io e Leon eravamo attaccati sulla linea del traguardo e sui mega schermi ho visto mia moglie che gioiva. Ma il photofinish ha stabilito il risultato e ho dovuto accontentarmi di 20 punti. Il mio Team non ha fatto modifiche sulla moto tre le due gare e al secondo via sono riuscito a scattare di nuovo bene. Poi però è stata una gara molto impegnativa: sono rimasto col gruppo davanti ma mi sono reso conto che sarebbe stata dura vincere e negli ultimi quattro giri è diventato ancora più difficile. Alla fine sono molto contento dei risultati di oggi che mi permettono di essere in seconda posizione in classifica: sarà una stagione lunga e combattuta ma oggi l’abbiamo cominciata bene!”

Noriyuki Haga (Gara 1 – 3° , Gara 2 – 5°): “Sono molto soddisfatto del mio risultato in Gara 1 perché stavo soffrendo di “arm-pump”, una conseguenza della caduta della mattina durante il warm-up. Ero fiducioso di poter fare una buona partenza, e ce l’ho fatta, e poi ho fatto di tutto per rimanere lì davanti insieme a Michel e Leon: solo il dolore al braccio non mi ha permesso di lottare come volevo. Comunque mi sono divertito molto e i punti che ho fatto nella prima manche sono davvero utili per il campionato. In Gara 2 il braccio ha continuato a farmi male tanto che è diventato sempre più difficile frenare e mi sono anche stancato fisicamente. Ma tutto sommato, con un occhio alla classifica e tenendo conto dell’incidente della mattina, non è andata male, ho fatto un terzo e un quinto, portando a casa buoni punti.”
